Only recently did I realize how beneficial coconuts are to my health and healing. I’m lucky to now live in a place where coconuts are plentiful and freely available. Whenever I take a walk, I invariably find 1-2 daily. For the last year, coconut has been a staple in my daily food – curries, cakes, cookies, and yummy desserts – coconut sure is a versatile nut.
Moreover, the benefits of coconut are all-pervasive. It’s good for the brain, body, and beauty. It can be ingested and applied. Coconut water also has detoxifying properties, helping to flush out toxins, support the body’s natural cleansing processes, and provide healthy electrolytes, since it contains potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Moreover, it’s refreshing and low-calorie, making it a popular and healthful beverage choice.

For dry skin, use coconut oil. Having teeth issues, gargle with coconut oil. Feeling thirsty, drink coconut water. Desperate for a snack, fresh coconut is a healthy choice. Whether used as oil, water, or milk, coconut is considered a vital part of Ayurvedic health practices since it has a balancing effect on the doshas.
Filled With Goodness
Coconut is loaded with important nutrients that support brain-body health. It contains vitamin C and several B vitamins. It’s also loaded with many essential minerals, like manganese, copper, selenium, phosphorus, potassium, and iron. Manganese supports enzyme function and fat metabolism, and copper assists bone formation and heart health. Thus making it a convenient superfood.
Quick Energy Boost
Even though it is high in saturated fat, it’s healthy since it contains medium–chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are a type of fat molecule that is shorter in length compared to the long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) found in most other dietary fats.
MCTs are absorbed more quickly by the body due to their shorter chain length, and don’t require the time-consuming digestive processes like LCTs. After ingestion, they go straight from the gut to the liver, where they are converted into ketones.
Ketones are substances produced when the liver breaks down a lot of fat, and they can be used by the brain for energy instead of glucose or sugar. You must have heard of the ketogenic diet, which helps burn fat. Calories in MCTs are used straight away; they are less likely to be stored as fat.
Lauric Acid
Coconut oil is the highest natural source of lauric acid. Lauric acid is a type of fatty acid that is found in small amounts in most foods, particularly coconut oil. It is easily absorbed and fuels neurotransmitters in the brain, which boosts serotonin levels, thus helping stabilize one’s mood and cognition.
Coconut is one of the best fats for brain health, proven to help with preventing depression, memory loss, and managing stress.
Recent studies have shown positive effects of coconut oil as a cheap and natural treatment for dementia.
Additionally, lauric acid also helps improve the immune system and maintain the elasticity of blood vessels.
All these add up to better mental health.
Digestive Health
The high fiber content in coconut helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation, ensuring a healthy digestive system. The fiber in coconut meat acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, which helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
Not surprisingly, people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have shown improvement after including coconut meat due to its fiber content and potential anti-inflammatory properties.
Skin and Hair Benefits
Furthermore, coconuts are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect the skin from free radical damage, thus reducing wrinkles. It’s also a great moisturizer, which makes it great for beauty and anti-aging.
Coconut milk is great for the hair. I’ve stopped using shampoo or any other synthetic products for my hair, just pure coconut milk. This could be the reason for my black hair. My maternal grandmother shared this secret of black hair in her 80s, and I religiously follow it. Maybe it could be genetic, too.
Significance In Hindu Tradition
Coconuts play a significant role in Hindu tradition. They are considered auspicious and are always used in poojas and important rituals like weddings, housewarmings, inaugurations, and purchases of new items like cars to invoke blessings for prosperity and abundance.
Hindus believe that breaking a coconut helps ward off negative energies and evil forces while inviting protection and blessings.
Coconut- The Superfood
Nonetheless, coconut has been part of my diet since childhood. Coconut milk or ground coconut was always added to our curries. Most of our sweets and snacks had coconut. It’s so versatile and convenient.
Its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties make it great for rejuvenation and healing. Its healthy fats are essential for the production of hormones and maintaining overall endocrine health.
Eating coconut meat often helps improve heart health, regulate blood sugar levels, accelerate weight loss, improve digestion, and boost your mental health. It’s a superfood for the brain, body, and beauty.
However, remember that coconut is high in fats, and even if they are good fats, eating too much of a good thing can be dangerous. Moderation is key to any health regime.
As far as possible, eat natural, not processed, coconut products. Like all processed foods, they will have preservatives, emulsifiers, and other additives that detract from the health benefits of any food. So, please check the labels always.
